Hi,

I've been interested in wood and woodworking for a long time. My
father was an amateur carpenter and woodworker. He planned to do more
after he retired, but unfortunately wasn't able to. My wife and I
enjoy going to the Del Mar fair here in San Diego and seeing the
woodworking exhibits. I've recently started taking classes at Palomar
College - a local college with an excellent woodworking (or should I
say, Cabinet and Furniture Technology) program. A natural tendency
towards neanderphilia has been increased by reading rec.ww, and now
this list. Also, considerations of cost, both in money and meat, make
me lean towards hand tools. They seem so much more pleasing -- quiet,
few or no moving parts, they can work well for several lifetimes, they
work better the better _you_ work, versus well, you know...

Anyway, I get plenty enough high-tech at work. What else? I juggle,
garden, take care of 40+ fruit trees, 11 cats, 7 ducks, 5 geese, 4
dogs, and 1 spouse. I also do computer firmware programming for money.

As for woodworking, I'm starting to get some tools together. My bench
right now is the top of a retaining wall -- not very deep, but real
solid!

Here's the question: A while ago, I planed a piece of rough cherry,
and was amazed! I saw grain patterns I've never seen in sawn wood. It
looked bright and almost three dimensional -- burnished, in fact. Is
there any way to keep this effect after finishing?

Thanks,
boB
