165376 pedger66@j... 2006‑12‑02 updated Bio
Galoots,

So I thought I'd join the fray and post an updated bio. Since I last
spoke to you I gave up my cabinet and furniture making business. Like
some others on the list have revealed, I can do stuff but I'm no business
man and am no good at self promotion. I got a job in a health and science
education center (a hands-on museum, sort of) in the exhibits department.
I get to repair, help plan and design new exhibits, and build prototypes.
The job combines my history of biology (BS), health care (RN), and love
of tinkering and using my hands. I remember as a 4 year old saying I
wanted to be a "fix-it man" when I grew up.

I still work in my own shop as well and have recently taken a basic
welding class to supplement woodworking and toolmaking. I am married with
2 grown sons, one of whom works in a shop making concertinas, and the
other works occasionally as a carpenter. LOML has a MLS and works in a
community college as a librarian. We live in the NC mountains, which is a
hotbed of crafts, the fine arts, and acoustic music, and odd lifestyles.
Asheville, is called the "Little Paris", since some other town copped the
title of "Paris of the South." I'm hoping to retire pretty soon!

I like old tools and processes but am a "blended woodworker". I use
whatever seems appropriate to the task at hand. I do dislike the noise,
dust, and danger of screaming tailed apprentices and try to avoid them
when I can. I still hollow out my plane soles in two areas. I'd take on
any of you in a thin-shaving contest. (Wink).

Best to all Galoots,
Phil Edgerton
