Brian Myers ( soon to be 41 yrs old.) unmarried, no kids, no job etc.
Born in New Jersey but currently living in Leola, PA. Have been
interested in woodworking for sometime but haven`t done much other than
trim work and repair in the houses I `ve lived in. I am currently trying
to put together a shop of power tools but want to expand my knowledge
and collection of hand tools also. I spend a lot of time on OWWM.org and
have been looking for a place like that for handtools which is what has
led me here .I have some handsaws, chisels, a few wooden planes and
various Stanley planes ( 3,4,5,6,7 + bolck planes ) so far. Most of what
I have needs reconditioning. The power tools I have been getting are
older also. I so far have 2 Delta bandsaws ( 1938,1973) , Dewalt/AMF
1030 10" RAS, RedStar Multiplex 12" RAS, 50`s Craftsman table saw, Vega
scrollsaw, 30`s Craftsman/Walker Turner 1/2" spindleshaper, Craftsman
disc/belt sander (50`s model) , 14"disc sander from BrodheadGarret,
12" Yates American lathe ( in need of bearings ) , late 1800`s 26"
Silver Manufacturing Bandsaw ( in need of babbitt repouring and some
machine work), and my latest and favorite baby is an 1880`s 40" Atlantic
Works bandsaw ( in need of babbitt repouring and the lower spindle needs
retruing to smooth out some grooving). Lathe work is by far my favorite
use of machines. Most of the older machines are in various states of
repair. I also have some newer stuff but prefer the older machines. For
all that machines can do, you still need hand tools to supplement them.
I used to work in a bicycle store as a mechanic (13yrs total) but have
had to leave do to Fibromyalgia ( hands can`t take constant wrenching,
hence the larger amount of machines vs. hand tools). I`ve also worked in
mail order as a packer and have worked at a commercial boarding kennel.
I guess thats all for now. I `ll just sit on the porch and listen in
for awhile.
