John,

One would have to ask how many pairs of shoes does your girlfriend have in
the closet? You may therefore be vindicated! Ha!

The marking near the "Bruder" is the name a the spa town Baden (bath) in
Switzerland, near Zurich. Apparently it had quite the boom in industrialization
in the late 1800s. It is the birthplace of the founders of Brown, Boveri &
Cie. (Brown, Boveri & Company; BBC), an electrical engineering firm (founded
1891), that eventually merged with ASEA to become the huge conglomerate ABB.
They made major components of electric railway locomotives, generators, etc.
Easy to see why they would need calipers. I cannot find any specific info on a
company named Bruder near there, although the surname is common enough.
