274538 Michael Suwczinsky <nicknaylo@g...> 2021‑09‑10 tool sale this (past) weekend - Oakland Whatzit?
Tim S. posted to the Bay Area Galoots (BAGs) sublist about a Labor Day Sale

" This is a truly odd and amazing situation – a tenant in this building (Paul)
has inherited a massive collection of commercial tools that date back to the
1800's. There are lathes, full sets of small tools in their orginal cases --
even 500 hammers, each with a historical specific purpose! There are 1000s of
fascinating items, lovingly collected over the years by a guy in the railroad
business, literally tons of history. Paul honestly believes it is the most
comprehensive collection of tools in the U.S. They are now in a forced sale THIS
WEEKEND by Paul (a close friend of the deceased) due to pressure from... family
heirs."

I got to visit this sale (and many of the local taco places) a few times over
the weekend and one of the mystery whatzit’s seen includes this one

70/

and Greg’s comments:

Anyone want to help explain to me that push/pull, two-blade scraper plane
looking thing in one of the photos? Looks like it is designed to slide on two
parallel rods, locked in place with that big set screw. Just speculating here...

Thinking back, this tool was in a pile with a couple of Stanley #70 box scrapers
and similar, and was unmarked.

Does anyone have ideas as to what this is for or from?

The sale was two generations of tools, machinery, sheet metal, woodworking etc
and my pics are here

Fun sale, got to see some friends. Now patiently waiting for the BOOKS to go on
sale

I have a single blade Stanley box scraper, with the arched logo on the
blade, that is similar. The scraper head is mounted on a 'Y' shaped handle
that permits the head to operate like a gimbal.

Somewhere in the deep, dark and dusty corners of my memory, your mystery
thingy brings to mind a line drawing in a book, possibly one by Alex
Bealer, of a floor plane that was mounted on a long handle.

The #74 is the Stanley floor plane on a long handle.

The picture might be the floor scrapers by gustave caillebotte.

A part for the notorious Stanley Fiberboard plane. It is a beveler, used to
bevel a groove (s) and is pushed from right to left. When attached to the main
body, the handle is to the right. The previous comments are in reference to your
picture. It is not a push pull tool. No greater reference to read than Blood &
Gore..#193.Still smelling smoke in Sacramento.

Thank you sir, that explains it. So many of us have been conditioned by
Blood and Gore to ignore this things. I always skip that portion of the
catalog.

Yes, great ID! Thanks! The old Stanley Fibre Board Cutter Groove and Bevel
Cutter Holder for Re-Sharpening Type Blades. Why didn't I think of that??

From the original estate sale photo, it appears to be sitting on the bed of
a (heavily used) miter box. I think I overestimated the size of the thing,
seeing it as closer to a Stanley #80 two-handed scraper, for example.

Anyway, pretty nifty in terms of gizmocity, if not actual utility, these
days. Anybody need to re-sharpen their groove and bevel type blade?

Take care, all of you,

I keep thinking of potential uses for the fiberboard plane. Cutting
mats for picture framing, maybe, and dare I say it?

Leather work?

It would be fun to play with one someday.

It does have great gizmos, I have a complete one that I stumbled upon 25 years
ago, and before I knew what it was,I bought. Couldn’t believe the low price, now
I know. For want of another project, made a quick fitted box for it. A pigs ear
in a silk pouch. There’s a complete one flea bay at $9.99 with two days  to go
and no watchers. And I’ll be waiting a long time to buy fiberboard.

This past Friday, I was at the Nittany Tractor Show and flea market, in Centre
Hall, PA. Not as much rust as in past years, but I came across one. Didn't give
it much of a look-see and I don't know enough about 'em to know how complete it
was. IIRC, the price was $60.00 or so. Guy also had a slightly used Bridge
City protractor, for $85.00, and that was the first I have ever seen BCT stuff
in the wild (nope, I didn't pop).

Only purchase was a cast iron Stanley utility knife, believe the number was
"1299". It was Stanley orange and boy does that cast iron heft feel nice in the
hand.

Gary looks for potential - but there is real, live, current, up to the minute
demand for these things..

I have the record equivalent, effectively NIB, and a while ago, my son and I
made a ‘building board’ for his model aircraft constructing from inch ply with a
layer of pinboard material atop. In the UK, that would be ’Sundeala’ fibreboard
- much used for noticeboards and such. (Naturally, we ensured a flat surface
using a No7 (trying plane, Jeff) to ensure no twist in the wings.

And - the final treatment was to bevel the edges using a fibreboard plane - the
perfect tool for the job.

I just went to the website to check, and it seems that Sundeala is good stuff
right now - here’s what they say.. (It’s a big relief for some of us to know
this. Maybe there’s a market for specialist tools forming.)

Sundeala FR board has been found to be 100% Coronavirus free 5 minutes from
infection in independent laboratory testing.
We are delighted that, after weeks of rigorous tests carried out by an ISO 17025
compliant UK laboratory, we can confirm that our FR board is 100% free from
human coronavirus both internally and externally in less than five minutes after
infection.
These results could not come at a better time for our customers as schools and
workplaces work hard to ensure that environments are safe from risk of
transition.
