275557 John Ruth <johnrruth@h...> 2022‑05‑13 Round Poll Hatchet with Doe Foot Handle
GG's

Today was a primo day, weather-wise, so I went across town to the Flea Market.

Most of the tools were things I already have, so I was very selective.

Among the rusty treasures is a hatchet with a round poll and a doe foot handle.
( Rotten, BTW! )

My question:
Is this the legendary "Riggers" or "Rig Builder's" hatchet, or isn't it big
enough.

The Taylor F-clamp seems extremely well-made. Not a familiar brand, so I
researched it. They were in Poughkeepsie, NY circa 1905.

The Plumb breaker bar has their trademark in raised relief on the handle. I
already have two breaker bars, but it spoke to me.

Encountered an older friend who said "This market just isn't as good as it used
to be." To which I replied "Nothing is as good as it used to be!" Inflation has
definitely struck this Flea: I had to cough up a total of $19 for everything in
that picture.

Maybe the $3 Calphalon omelet pan took some of the sting off it.

John -

My inclination would be to call that a roofer's or carpenter's hatchet (~22
oz head w/12" handle). Rigger's hatchet/ax (~28 oz head w/18" handle) is
bigger than that one appears to be, although my eyes may be deceiving me.
I wonder if the handle on your hatchet is a replacement. Seems like most
hatchets of that style have straight handles.

I'm with Phil, the handle looks like a replacement

And lots of round poll hatchets here and following to help you guess what
flavor

I'm with Phil
Riggers axes are substantially bigger with longer handles.
Its a carpenters hatchet and someone recarved a camp ax handle to fit.

Pretty cool find to me, most polled hatchets in this size are lath
hatchets with the blade never rising above the poll (so's you don't
scratch the ceiling hanging lath).

With the smaller size and full blade I expect you could drive the
occasional nail, do some casual carving/fitting wood and lop off a
chicken head............. with ease haahaha.
Good household/farm tool.

19 whole bucks! Holy Cow what's this country coming to?

Still looking for that lineman's hatchet with the square wrench cut out
and marked "Bell System".

I have all grandpa's Bell system tools except that. Cousin left it in an
empty boxcar on the tracks behind grandma's house when we were 12.
