276092 Tony Blanks <dynnyrne@i...> 2022‑08‑08 Odd plane question
Friends,

To clarify the subject line, it is the plane which seems odd to me
rather than the question.  The images are on the website of an Aus
set-price dealer so the asking price is what it is.

https://www.toolexchange.com.au/product/vintage-plane-double-handle-3-8-groove-
in-good-condition/

Can anyone recognise this device, identify it and tell me how it is
meant to be used?  I have been puzzling for a couple of days now, and am
beginning to wonder if all the parts (the blade for instance) are
present or it has been wrongly assembled.  I understand the uses for a
3/8" groove but it seems there are easier ways to do the job. It has me
bluffed!

Regards to all,

Tony,

It looks like a Grasshopper plow plane. Sandusky made them. I don’t know about
others. Use? I don’t know.

Odd indeed,

I can’t see any images - tried safari, opera, and Tor

must be like the Emperor’s clothes - only those in the clutches of the
collecting gods can see the tools.

It's a weatherstripping plane. Check Blood and Gore for Paddy waxing
poetic on that subject. Does look like handles are on backwards.

Yup a weatherstrip grooving plane that was introduced when weatherstripping
became a thing.
It's supposed to be pulled, not pushed as far as I know which is why this
particular one looks wrong.
Cheers from Waterloo

Oh, I'm glad I wasn't going mad, I'm looking at it trying to figure out how
it would work and thinking something wasn't right.

I would classify that as a coach makers router, in my head. Looks like it
cuts 2 parallel grooves, not a single large one. And I agree with pulled,
but this version disagrees on that, but agrees on grasshopper and
Sandusky. So what do I know?

https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/uncommon-sandusky-grasshopper-
double-3826921483

And once you go down that rabbit hole, we are all wrong on pulled vs pushed.

https://www.google.com/search?q=sandusky+grasshopper+plane&rlz=1C1GCEA_enUS977US

And Stuart is a member here, so you might get a separate response.

Kirk in Half Moon Bay, CA, a little garage time over the weekend got some
messes cleaned up.
