I don't think the insanity for No. 1's has passed. I started an eBay auction last night for a Lie-Nielsen No. 1. This isn't just any typical pristine Lie Nielsen No. 1; it is likely one of the most neglected, beat-up ones out there. It would actually be fine for someone shopping for a user No. 1, but does such a person exist? I started the auction at $10, resigned to get maybe $50-100 for it. Within the first 30 minutes it was bid up to about $150, and it now stands at $380, with six days to go. That is considerably more than I paid for it three years ago in a Craigslist purchase. https://www.ebay.com/itm/175376511116 On Sat, Aug 6, 2022 at 4:03 PM Kevin Foley |

Lie-Nielsen quit producing the no. 1. I can't find an example currently for sale for less than yours is currently selling for. In fact I only see one other for sale at the moment. There is obviously demand for the L-N no. 1 as you've shown. The supply is clearly very limited. So what will the market determine the price to be? On a related note, and of no surprise to some of you.. some of the earliest rarest Lie-Nielsen tools have been getting very strong prices over the past few years. I think this is due in good part to the fact that L-N never intended these to be collector's items. Josh ... wishing for air conditioning in sweltering Connecticut |

Patrick Leach may still be producing a #1. His version was a Bedrock version. T Anthony M. Zaffuto, President Metaltech, Inc. 3547 Watson Hwy. DuBois, PA. 15801 www.metaltech-pm.com (814) 375-9399 (814) 541-5019 (cell) |

The Lie Nielsen thing adds another level to the craziness. IIRC LN set out to reproduce some useful tools that had become rare and expensive collector’s pieces, therefore unavailable to woodworkers The prices realized on some of the LN repros are surpassing the antique originals. I listed and older LN item on the ‘lectric landfill, it ended up in a bidding war and the final price was a little north of 5x what I paid for it new. I was waiting for the other shoe to fall. I figured the winner bid too much and was going to back out. I hoped he would just ask and not want to do a bogus return after shipping it. But no. He couldn’t have been happier to get it at the wildly inflated price. It’s easy to find a Stanley 10 1/4 for less than an LN. The LNs are fetching big prices which is strange because it’s on hold, not discontinued. It’s just a matter of waiting. I was an "Early Adopter" for L-N planes, and have many of the rare ones, that "Fortunately (?) " due to divorce and loss of my shop have been sitting in their original boxes for many years (Bronze #1,, original Bronze-Manganese #9, Original Ductile-Iron #9, some # of 500 planes, at least (1) White -Bronze. Some of the more common L-N are used, but those listed weren't, and now they sit, but I am loathe to let them go. 😊 I've got to believe that specimens in their original, and sometimes mismarked boxes (For the *9's) with paperwork are worth more to a collector than to me as a casual user. At some point it will be obvious that it is stupid of me to keep hanging on to them. -----Original Message----- From: oldtools@g... |

Yes, the lack of other competitive listings at the moment was one factor in my selling it now. Only two others have sold on eBay in the last month, in the $800 range. It's hard for me to believe that my auction will go any higher. |

I agree with Kevin. LN tool prices have shown no signs of waning on flea bay, even those that are currently back in stock. I have a lot of LN tools and the only one I overpaid for is an LN-9, which was discontinued in 2015. I have a dedicated shooting plane so don’t use it for its originally intended purpose, yet it’s become one of my favorite planes, literally a block plane on steroids. I’m a user not a collector, so if I want a tool I’m willing to wait for it at a fair price. Someone once surmised that the reason LN tool prices are inflated on eBay is because of international buyers. I never put much credence in that; LN has many international distributors. With the exception of very rare collectible items, I do think prices on Stanley, Sargent, et al, are beginning to show signs of coming down, in some cases significantly. I just sold a Stanley No. 55 spokeshave in excellent condition for exactly what I paid for it 3 years ago. Stanley #5 planes are going for $50-$60, a few months ago they were usually over $100. I suspect a lot of people who got caught up in the Covid tool buying mania had no intention other than flipping them and making a quick buck. Well mama, turn out the lights, that party’s over. I did a quick look on JB's site for the sold listings, and they range from $299 to $1395, depending on the body material. Chris, I just looked at your listing. Yeah it’s a beater, but with 6 days to go I’m predicting $550-$600. Stephen |

Here's someone who thinks the insanity should go on. https://www.ebay.com/itm/115488539411 I think it's OK to post this live auction, 'cuz I really don't think anyone on here is thinking this is a deal. If you feel you were cheated out of a deal, I will let you buy my #1 for 2000.00 USD Buyer has 253 ratings, and does list other tools, so a good chance he's legit. Hey Ray, There were even a few of the Bronze #9s that sold for $3300 and $3500. That was a few months ago. The collection I’m helping to liquidate had one bronze 9, and I just sold it a few weeks ago at $2600. I’m currently selling the 150yr commemorative #1 that was made in 1993. Again, a few months ago one sold for $1500 I believe. But a few have sold since then for less. I couldn’t get anyone to bid $1100 for mine (pristine), so I lowered the price to $850 yesterday, and I’ve got two bids already. The super high LN did peak a few months ago, but they’re still very strong compared to a few years ago. My data points Matthew Groves Springfield, MO |

I still remember when Patrick mailed a bunch of parts for these (the frogs perhaps) to me in Lincoln so that he could put the planes together for the Omaha MWTCA meet something like 20 years ago. Those were fun times! I was happy to see Patrick at a meet in Minnesota that I was able to go to last Fall on my way to a (long postponed due to covid) Rolling Stones show in Minneapolis. It underlined the length of time since I saw him more regularly that his son is now in college. I do miss the social aspect of oldtools that I got away from as my hobbies kind of got away from me. - Mark |

Thanks, the prices do seem to cycle. I like owning them, but there are some holes in my standard user L-N collection that I should fill Letting them go would help me achieve that completion. -----Original Message----- From: oldtools@g... |

I still feel like the new guy on The Porch compared to many. However, I do remember the days when Tom would sign his planes if you asked. I recently bought a collection that had a bunch of the old white boxed L-N tools, most of which were signed which is what made me remember this. I also remember when Tom would regularly visit the Woodcraft in Norwalk, CT to show off the new tools they were making. Thinking about it, that was 20+ years ago. wow. Josh |

There's a reason that boxes and wrappings and literature are called 'ephemera.' In a century, it wouldn't surprise me if an original box doubled the value of the plane. And a box with a signature!? Now that you reminded me I believe the Limited Edition (To 250) White Bronze #102 has his signature scribed on. I'll have to dig it out and check. -----Original Message----- From: oldtools@g... |
