Today sort of kicked off Madison Bouckville Antique Week, although technically
it starts tomorrow and people have been there set up and selling for a few days
all ready.

The view from the road on the way into town.

Rows and rows of tents, some filled, some waiting.

There were some great old tools, but at prices too steep for this old boy.

I was as tired as I looked. The step counter on my phone said 2.9 miles, but
that thing only records 75 to 80% of the total walking.

Pickings were slow and well not great in volume. (Sorry about the bad pics,
fighting with the sun and shadows.) There is a funky big t-handle tapered
reamer, a pair of flat jaw blacksmith tongs (I did see lots of tongs, but they
must have been made from solid gold based on the asking prices!), a fairly good
jointer's mallet, a fairly clean Greenlee drawknife, a Karpenter folding handle
drawknife that needs some work, (and I left easily another 20 drawknives out on
the fields of battle because of over pricing and very poor conditions,) and a
Stanley SW No. 81 scraper plane.

This batch includes a big hand forged sciliop or tapered reamer, a Star patent
marking gage, a couple of hardwood (the one is rosewood, the other might be
ebony) leather burnishers, a pair of bevel side chisels, a blacksmith 2 3/4"
flatter head, an early iron bitstock with a wooden pad, a layout knife from
Pakistan, an E C Stearns adjustable mouth spokeshave, and another mallet with
what feels like a Lignum Vitae head.

Tomorrow the fun starts early (well not too early, up at 7:00 AM and back there
before 9:00 AM)

Hi, Tony,
For years your buying reports have been a deep and reliable pleasure to me. Its
about time I said so.

I agree and want to add the manufacturer’s histories and descriptions of some of
the tools are not only educational but entertaining as well. I always look
forward to them.

Indeed, all true Tom. But looking at those pictures, the bizarre thought
that is now nestled in my noggin is "what would it be like doing large
scale rust hunting on grass vs. asphalt?" Would it be like a US/Australian
Open specialist going to Wimbledon and trying his luck?

I’d like to add my echo to that sentiment. I’ll shout loud, ‘cos it must be 5
or 6 thousand miles from here.

Paul,

Unpaved Flea Market grounds can be muddy or, if devoid of vegetation, dusty.

The Englishtown, NJ, Flea Market is largely unpaved. There's little ground
cover; too much traffic. Locals refer to it as "The Dirt Mall." I can attest
that a hot August day there can be very trying! The dust is blowing around
nonstop!

In heavy rains, these same grounds flood from a nearby brook. If you arrive
soon after a long rain, you'll understand.

Well, seeing as how my knees are over 15 years past their expiration
date, walking on grass is about the only way that I can do the long haul
picking trips.  Walking on paved surfaces or even hard packed dirt, adds
a layer of pain and aggravation, especially with a heavy backpack full
of goodies.  I kept the weight down this trip to, at the most 30 lbs,
but still...

Thanks for all of the comments, the trip reports are fun to do.

Tony (still working off the aches)

Thank you John for reminding me that the grass isn't always greener!
Wisdom of the porch exemplified.
