Greetings,
Been lurking for a few months now, and thought it might be time join the
fun. I'm a 26 year old computer programmer living in Columbus, GA. My
family consists of my wife of little over a year, and our 1 year old JRT
pup.
6 months or so ago, a buddy of mine bought himself a house, and
proceeded to take the plunge into woodworking. he purchased a few
tools(table saw, router...) and we make regular nights hanging out in the
shop. And when we're not out there, we're discussing it. it's really
re-awakened the memories of hanging out in the shop with dad when i was 10
years old, smelling of sawdust and mineral spirits.
my experience with woodworking mainly consists of my younger years, til
i was 13-14. dad had the shop in the backyard complete with a shopsmith
markV and a RAS, along with the odd hand plane or two, and a few hand saws.
I also had a slight rebirth in college when i took a woodshop class. now i
spend my time hanging out in my friend's shop, dreaming of my shop to be,
and collecting the basic tools that i can squeeze in past SWMBO, thinking i
can collect all my small hand tools, and when i get my shop up and
running(just bought a house, and fixing the leaky roof in the garage is the
first order of business), splurge on a few nice power tools. however, ever
since i bought a set of blue-chips, some japanese water stones, and lee's
sharpening book, i've discovered that i'm fascinated with the hand tool. i
think that getting garrett hack's "the handplane book"(and discovering this
group) was the final straw. as of yet, i've done nothing more than tinker
around with a new stanley 60 1/2 that i bought just to be have SOMETHING to
try to tune and learn to use, so i have no idea if i even have the aptitude
for traditional methods, but by golly, i'm gonna give it a shot. i guess
you could call me a galoot wannabe.
So, just wanted to say hi, and that i think this is a great group of
folks. I'm glad that i discovered it, and wanna say thanks already for all
the great info i've picked up. Seeya 'round
