Angle Calculator

Setting bevel The following table shows the rise and run for any angle. To use, simply set a carpenter's square with one arm along the edge of a scrap of wood and make a mark for the rise and run on the board. Draw a line between these marks, and you can then set your bevel gauge to this angle. The image on the right shows a few of these lines marked on a scrap, and the bevel gauge set to the 28 degree line.

For the second set of angles, simply reverse the rise and run values. The table was designed for use with a square set in inches to the sixteenth, but these values would work with any units.

I used a computer program to determine the best combination of rise and run for each angle given the constrant that 12 inches was the maximum rise or run and that sixteenths were the finest gradation that could be used. You are welcome to download the source code for this program (Java) (7 KB).

A PDF version (34 KB) of this table is also available. You'll get better results printing out the PDF version than trying to print this page.
