Steve Shapland, Aurora, CO My Oldtools bio is dated June, 1996 Maybe
it's time for an update.

---------------------- CUT & ADD TO BIO FILES -----------------------
Update - May 2007 I did finish that cradle. It's a strip built Bahama
Dingy from "The Expectant Father's Cradle Boat Book" in cherry for a grand-
daughter who's mother is career Coast Guard. I retired from the software
industry in 1999, bought a small trailer, and started travel, taking
various woodworking classes along the way. Completed the Sack Back class
at the Windsor Institute (Mike Dunbar of Hampton NH) in 2002. Studied
spoon carving with Mark Sfirri at Penland, NC (penland.org) in 2006. I'm
still an active member of the Rocky Mountain Tool Collectors (rmtc.org)
and was an active member of the Colorado Period Furniture Makers Guild
(now defunct). I've been taking various woodworking classes at a local
community college and teaching hand tool techniques at local woodworking
stores. I've spent summers as a WorkKamper assisting the maintenance
staff in a mountain subdivision. My most recent project has been making
6 copies of my great-grandmother's quilt rack for my family; this was
the project my father was working on the day he died, 15 yrs ago. I
needed to learn turning for the 50+ spindles. Future plans include
swapping the house & shop for a slightly larger trailer complete with a
small shop. Then more travel, more WorkKamper type work, and possibly
even joining the Habitat-for-Humanity caravan. ----------------- END OF

Mr. Sprang!

I still recall making a run on an antique mall with you and one or two
other local Galoots in the Cincinnati area many years ago...

Barnes and pedal-powered tools, eh?

Just a few weeks back, an acquaintance of mine bestowed upon me,
completely gratis, a very nice example of a New Rogers treadle scroll
saw. Only a few flaws - no emory wheel, but the drill chuck is intact.
The lower wingnut for holding the blade is MIA, and has been replace
with a modern zinc slot-head screw (I would love to get a nice wingnut
to match the top one, but that probably is not going to happen unless I
make my own), and - as is apparently par for the course with these -
the little blower bellows is completely gone. But other than that, it's
all original and in great shape. You can still see most of the
pinstriping. He had put a new leather sewing machine belt on it, and
after I shortened it about 1/4 inch, it works like a champ! I put a new
blade in it, and my daughters had lots of fun cutting up paint stir-
sticks from Lowe's.

Now there's one just like it on the local Craig's list for $550!! I
think the seller is, shall we say, optimistic. But I might sell mine for
half that... ;-)

Guess it might be time for an update, since I last updated 8
years ago :-)

update follows:
================================================
I have been interested in old tools since a seminar with Eugene Landon
back in the early 80's (1980's ). Got my first molding planes a
few weeks later, have been adding to the collection ever since. I have a
pretty good collection - er, set - of planes now.

My interests are primarily user tools, although I do my part to preserve
history. If you have any planes or Barnes or peddle powered tools that
need a good home, feel free to send them my way .

Most of the woodworking I do these days is period reproductions,
primarily Federal style. I like to carve and do a fair bit of carving as
well. I am restoring a 1936 colonial, so a fair bit of effort goes into
that project as well.
