Galloping Galoots! I just found the fitted cherry box for my marking knife, ratting and rummaging around the shop as I do---it's a great knife, arrow-pointed and double-edged, so that one can draw a line off the *flat* of the knife on the left or right side of a straightedge and needn't ever consider the thickness of the tool---I know I'm describing it badly and I know you all know what I'm talking about---anyway, the lovely box, which I put away long ago, has a pencilled inscription in the lid: 'For Gary May Bretton Wade, 2004'... I hope you're as happy as I am that you gave it to me, old friend, must've been some twenty years ago. With love, respect and best wishes always; gam in OlyWA/USA and all the best to all galoots everywhere on this magnificent earth! "If you were Einstein's father, we wouldn't have the bomb." GG's, Tools as memory triggers or "temporal touchstones". They can remind us of "Old Days, Old Times, Old Friends." All the better if they are signed. John Ruth |

Nice to read your story about Bretton Wade, Gary. I have a Stanley #4-1/2 I bought from Bretton at a PNTC meeting many years ago. I think of him every time I pick it up. It came to me with a Hock iron and tuned to within a millimeter of its life. Performs like a champ. Bretton (a.k.a. "Nosmo King") was a master of April Fool's Day posts. Whatever happened to that fine Porch tradition? April 1 is coming soon. Time to put on your collective thinking caps, fellow galoots! Cheers, Chuck Taylor north of Seattle |

Galoots, Gasp! My wife and i are having to contemplate moving into an appt. building with no stairs. You know what that means: the perennial question of how to pass on my tools to a good. home. What Are the current thoughts? "Patina" seems like it might be a good idea. Know of any other sales, auctions, or other solutions to my problem? I'd even consider donating a portion of them. I plan to equip a toolbox with a few essentials to take with me. No huge rush. I have at least a few days in which to act. (Just kidding). Phooey! It's hell to get old. Sorry, but there it is. Phil, I have been unwinding my “collection” for several years now. I do Patina every year, done a local tool swap at one of the woodworking supply places, ebay and of course this list. If you are moving soon, you are late to the game. There are oodles of took dealers around who will buy or take consignments — I have gone this route too — but they need to be close. You don’t want to be shipping to a dealer. I can still handle the stairs so am not in a hurry. Bill |

We are not moving, but at soon to be 72, I am not moving as well as a few years ago. I still am planning attending PATINA, though I doubt I will be buying much (maybe a MF #15). I have selectively given items away, mainly user grade, miter boxes, chisels, etc. I can see accelerating the process over the next few years, though! Anthony M. Not even close to retirement or moving and I've been trying to thin the herd a bit. The heavy stuff, that wasn't so heavy when it got here, first. Moving the smithy last year put wants and needs in sharp contrast. Some of the BAGs have recently been redistributing another's shop as well, Michael On Fri, Feb 23, 2024 at 6:15 AM Phil E. |
