We have a kind of oak here that does not always want to split when it
dries. Its not the biggest tree but it often cures just as you would
like. As a bonus, the bark shrinks and welds itself on and its very
tough, when you want some bark.
Its not a common tree and I have no name for it. I call it pin oak.

Some favorite tools employed. A 4-in-hand shoe rasp was the first rasp I
ever got. Its still far and away my favorite all around. They have quit
making the 10" size. You can get 8's a dime a dozen anywhere, but the
most precious 10's are gone.
