Hello My name is Steve Knight. I just got my first plane form Pat the other day (well had a new record but never figured it out (G)) A stanley #4. I got a 250 grit diamond stone for getting nicks out and flattening backs. Well after spending 40 minutes getting a back flat and houes tring to get a straight edge on the Iron (yes I had one of those jigs But I do not think they are ment for heavy grinding) So I have been thinkinh of getting a grinder (I can hear the teeth grinding) But went for it and got the delta sharpening center. Took some time and a few messups to get it set up but now it works. I figure I will use what does the best job and it does a great job. Got the iron honed then took it to the 6000 grit waterstone and finished it off. Then ground the chip breaker so it fit flat against the blade. then I moved the part that holds evrything forward with the blade in till the mouth gap had a hairline opening. Started planing Got the depth set right and I get full length very thin shavings. COOL found juts little turns of the knop really made a diff. Now I do not get tearout (well mabe a little in rock maple) Question Will all smooters leave the ridges between passes Or will a more expensive (norris) smoother not let these show or is it me? And do customers complain about them? See ya. |
